Class: Primary 5
Subject: Mathematics
Topic: Three-dimensional shapes ( Prisms and Pyramids)
A prism is a solid with a uniform cross-section. The top and bottom faces are the same.
Examples of prisms are cubes, cuboids, and cylinders.
A pyramid is a solid with a non-uniform cross-section. The top has only one vertex.
Examples are triangular-based pyramid, square-based pyramid, rectangular-based pyramid, and circular-based pyramid ( cone)
A vertex is a point where three or more edges meet. It is a corner point of a 3-D shape.
A face is a 2-D shape (known as a plane shape).
An edge is a line where two faces meet.
Triangular prism:
5 faces, 9 edges, 6 vertices
Square/ Rectangular prism (cubes and cuboids) :
6 faces, 12 edges, 8 vertices
Circular prism ( cylinders) :
3 faces, 2 edges and no vertices.
Pyramids:
Triangular-based pyramid:
4 faces, 6 edges, 4 vertices
Circular-based pyramid (cone) :
2 faces, 1 edge, 1 vertex
Square-based/ Rectangular-based pyramid:
5 faces, 8 edges, 5 vertices
Exercise:
Answer the following questions.
1. A ______________ is a solid with a uniform cross-section.
2. A ______________ is a solid with non-uniform cross-section, which top has only one vertex.
3. List three examples of a prism. ___________________, _______________, ________________.
4. A _____________ is an example of a circular-based pyramid.
5. What is a vertex? _______________________________________________________________________________________
6. A line where two faces meet is called a/an _______________.
