SECTION A: COMPREHENSION
METALS:
Metals products are essential part of our lives. For example, they can form the framework of Blackpool Tower or may be delicately formed into the hands on the cafe clock.
Most of the metals we use begin their lives in the earth as an ore. An ore is a mixture of metal abd waste material. In order to extract the metal, the waste material has to be removed.
When we make toffee, the ingredients are mixed together and are heated in a pan. Eventually the mixture turns into a liquid which can be poured into a tray or moulds to cool. Metals can be cooked in a similar way. The process of extracting the metal from the ore is known as smelting.
If we melt two or more metals together, we can form a new material. This material is called an alloy.
Copper and zinc are two soft metals. By melting them together they make an alloy called brass. Brass is harder and springier than either copper or zinc.
Metals can be divided into two groups which are called ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
Ferrous metals contain iron. Steel is a ferrous metal because it contains iron and carbon.
Non-ferrous metals do not contain any iron. Aluminum, copper, gold, lead, silver, tin and zinc are examples of non-ferrous metals.
