Lesson Note for Primary 6
Subject : Basic Science
Topic: The Circulatory System
Objective:
By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
- Define the circulatory system.
- Identify the main parts of the circulatory system.
- Explain the functions of the circulatory system.
- Understand the importance of keeping the circulatory system healthy.
Introduction:
- Begin by asking pupils if they know how blood moves around the body.
- Explain that the circulatory system is responsible for transporting blood, nutrients, oxygen, and waste products throughout the body.
Main Content:
- Definition:
- The circulatory system is a network of the heart, blood, and blood vessels that moves blood around the body.
2. Main parts:
- Heart: A muscular organ that pumps blood. The heart is divided into four chambers namely: the right and left ventricles, the right and left auricles. The heart beats 72 times in a minute.
- Blood: The blood is the reddish substances that comes out when there is a cut. The blood is life. The fluid that carries oxygen, nutrients, and wastes.
- Blood vessels: Tubes that carry blood to and from different parts of the body. These include arteries, veins, and capillaries.
- Functions:
- Transport oxygen from the lungs to the body cells.
- Carry carbon dioxide and other waste products away from cells to be removed from the body.
- Deliver nutrients from the digestive system to the cells.
- Help regulate body temperature.
- Importance of a healthy circulatory system:
- Eating healthy foods, exercising, and avoiding harmful substances like tobacco help keep the heart and blood vessels strong.
Activities:
- Draw and label the main parts of the circulatory system.
- Discuss how exercise affects the heart.
- Simple experiment: Feeling the pulse to understand heartbeats.
Conclusion:
- Recap the key points.
- Emphasize the role of the circulatory system in keeping us healthy.
Evaluation/ Assessment:
- Ask pupils to name the main parts of the circulatory system.
- Explain the function of the heart.
- Describe one way to keep the circulatory system healthy.
- The heart beats how many times in a minutes?
- The heart is divided into how many chambers?
- The Circulatory System is divided into ____________________ and __________________
