Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :

i. Explain the sense of taste

ii. Mention the sensitive layers of the tongue

iii. Identify the tongue and parts of the tongue

Reference Book : Stan Basic Science and Technology for Primary Schools, Book 2.

Instructional Material : Chart showing the tongue, and real objects like : sugar, salt, lime, bitter leaf.

previous Knowledge : Learners have been taught about the five senses and easily identify the tongue as organ of taste.

Content :

The tongue is the sense organ of taste. It is located inside the mouth and it is red in colour. It helps to identify things around us that are sweet, bitter, sour and salty.

The tongue is made up of four major taste namely :

Sweet : examples of sweet things are sugar, honey, sweet, ice cream, chocolate, fruits juice, and fruits (pineapple, apple, orange, banana)

Bitter : examples are bitter leaf, bitter kola,black coffee and chloroquine

Sour : examples are lime, lemon, grape

Salty : examples are sea water, tears of the eyes,

Tasteless substances which cannot be put into the mouth. They serve as poison to the body. Examples are detergent soap, kerosine, diesel, and dirty water.

All edible food substances such as food, sugar, fruits, wine, candy, fruit juice, etc. They are safe to be tasted with the tongue.

Presentation Steps :

Step 1 : The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learner by asking them questions orally.

Step 2 : He/ she introduces the new topic by asking the learners, ” what is the sense of taste?”, “where can it be found? “

Step 3 : The teacher then guides the learners and describe the tongue and mentions it functions

Step 4 : He/ she then describe and mentions the taste carried out by the tongue. Calls on the learners to give examples of sweet, bitter, sour and salty substances.
