iii. Identify the common drugs or medicines used when we are ill.

Content :

Meaning of drugs

Drugs can be defined as substances used to treat an illness. A drug can also be define as a chemical that can alter the way our works or functions.

Types of drugs

There aare two types of drugs. These are :

  1. Legal drugs and
  2. Illegal drugs

Legall drugs are the drugs prescribed by a doctor, nurse or pharmacist. They are useful to our body to cure sicknesses, pains, etc. Examples of legal drugs are : panadol, paracetamol, blood tonic, vitamin c, cough syrup, etc.

illegal drugs are drugs not prescribed by any doctor, nurse or pharmacist. They are also called hard drugs because they are dangerous to our body. Examples of illegal drugs are : Marijuana, cocaïne, heroine, ecstasy, Indian hemp, etc.

Sources of Drugs.

Drugs can be gotten from either chemical processes or from natural sources which comes from plant parts.

Drugs from chemical processes can come inform of tablets, syrups, capsules, injections, etc. Example of these drugs are paracetamol, vitamin c, cough syrup, amoxil, amartem, leonart, ciprofloxacin, flagyl, ointment, rubb, balm, embrocation, antacid, etc.

Drugs from plant parts such as roots, leaves, bark of plant, seeds and stems are called herbs. Example are lemon grass, bitter leaf, lime, lemon, etc.

Presentation Steps :

Step 1: The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking them questions orally.

Step 2: He/she introduces the new lesson by defining drugs and gives examples.

Step 3: He/she then identify and list the types of drugs with several examples.

Step 4: The teacher then mentions some of the sources of Drugs and gives examples

  5. Mention three examples of illegal drugs.

Conclusion/ Wrap up :

The teacher summarizes the lesson for a better understanding and makes the necessary corrections. He/ she then marks the learners notebooks.
