Lesson Note for Primary 6

Subject : Basic Science

Topic: The Circulatory System

Objective:
By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Define the circulatory system.
  2. Identify the main parts of the circulatory system.
  3. Explain the functions of the circulatory system.
  4. Understand the importance of keeping the circulatory system healthy.

Introduction:

  • Begin by asking pupils if they know how blood moves around the body.
  • Explain that the circulatory system is responsible for transporting blood, nutrients, oxygen, and waste products throughout the body.

Main Content:

  1. Definition:
  • The circulatory system is a network of the heart, blood, and blood vessels that moves blood around the body.

2. Main parts:

  • Heart: A muscular organ that pumps blood. The heart is divided into four chambers namely: the right and left ventricles, the right and left auricles. The heart beats 72 times in a minute.
  • Blood: The blood is the reddish substances that comes out when there is a cut. The blood is life. The fluid that carries oxygen, nutrients, and wastes.
  • Blood vessels: Tubes that carry blood to and from different parts of the body. These include arteries, veins, and capillaries.
  1. Functions:
  • Transport oxygen from the lungs to the body cells.
  • Carry carbon dioxide and other waste products away from cells to be removed from the body.
  • Deliver nutrients from the digestive system to the cells.
  • Help regulate body temperature.
  1. Importance of a healthy circulatory system:
  • Eating healthy foods, exercising, and avoiding harmful substances like tobacco help keep the heart and blood vessels strong.

Activities:

  • Draw and label the main parts of the circulatory system.
  • Discuss how exercise affects the heart.
  • Simple experiment: Feeling the pulse to understand heartbeats.

Conclusion:

  • Recap the key points.
  • Emphasize the role of the circulatory system in keeping us healthy.

Evaluation/ Assessment:

  • Ask pupils to name the main parts of the circulatory system.
  • Explain the function of the heart.
  • Describe one way to keep the circulatory system healthy.
  • The heart beats how many times in a minutes?
  • The heart is divided into how many chambers?
  • The Circulatory System is divided into ____________________ and __________________
