Behavioural Objectives: By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to :
i. Identify the classifications of energy-giving foods
ii. Describe each classes and list examples.
Content:
Energy – giving foods are foods that give energy when eaten and it gives the farmers strength and power to work efficiently. Energy – giving foods can be classified into two and these are:
i. Grain crops
ii. Tuber crops
Grain crops are crops noted for supplying energy to the body. Most grain crops are members of the grass family grown from their edible seeds. Grain crops are called cereal crops.
Examples of grain crops are
- Millet
- Wheat
- Rice
- Corn (maize)
- Barley and
- Sorghum
All the above mentioned grain crops are food eaten by human and animals. They can be eaten directly or processed into another form before being eaten.
Tuber crops are crops that grow underground as the root of a plant. They supply energy to the body. Tuber crops may also be called carbohydrates.
Examples of tuber crops are :
- Yam
- Cassava
- Sweet potato
- Cocoyam
Tuber crop are further divided into two:
i. Stem Tuber crops, e. g. Cassava
ii. Root tuber crops, e. g. Yam
Presentation Step: The teacher presents the lesson using the steps stated below:
Step 1: He/ she revises the previous topic with the learners in form of questions and calls them in turn to answer.
Step 2: He / she introduces the new lesson by asking the questions, “what are the classes of Energy- giving foods?”
Step 3: He/ she calls the learners to describe the classes of energy – giving food with several examples
Step 4 : The teacher then mention the division of tuber crops with examples.
Step 5: He/ she entertains questions and then write Note on the board for the learners to copy in their notebooks.
