iii. Identify the various parts of a lever
iv. Different functions and uses of a lever
Content :
What is a lever?
A lever is a simple machine that makes our work easier, faster and less difficult to do.
For any work to be done, force must be applied to do work.
A force applied at one point on the device can be used to easily overcome another force at some point in time
Examples of simple machines that can be classified as levers are :
a) tin opener
b) crow bar
c) plier
d) wheelbarrow
The parts of a lever
The three major parts of a lever are :
I. The load : is the weight that we are trying to lift or move.
II. The effort : is the force we apply on the lever.
III. The fulcrum : is a point or support around which the lever turns.
Classes of lever
1. First Class Lever : This is a lever in which the fulcrum is in-between the load and the effort. eg seesaw, pliers, claw, crowbar etc
2. Second class lever : This is a type of Lever in which the load is in the middle between the fulcrum and effort. E.g. bottle opener, nutcracker, paper cutter, etc.
3. Third class lever : In this type of Lever the effort is in the middle between the fulcrum and the load. Examples are : forceps, sugar tong, table knives, fishing rod, etc.
Uses of lever
1. Levers are used to lift heavy objects
2. Levers are used to move heavy objects
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : Revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking them questions orally
Step 2 : Introduces the new topic by explaining simple machine and a lever
Step 3 : Identify the parts of a simple lever and mentions the classes of lever.
Step 4 : List examples of each classes and State the uses of a lever.
Evaluation : (Class work)
1. A ___________ is a simple machine that makes work more easier and faster. (a) lever (b)
2. The part of a lever that serves as support or a point of turning is called ______________. (a) Load (b) fulcrum (c) Effort
3. The ___________ is the force apply on a lever to lift or move a load. (a) effort (b) load (c) fulcrum
4. Which classes of lever has fulcrum in the middle between load and effort ? (a) First class (b) Second class (c) Third class
5. Wheel barrow is an example of what class of lever? (a) 1st class (b) 2nd class (c) 3rd class
6. All the following are examples of first class Lever except ___________. (a) sugar tong (b) pliers (c) hammer
Conclusion : At the end of the lesson, learners were able to answer the following questions while the teacher makes some corrections.
