Instructional Material : Charts showing some simple farm tools used in raising a field crop.
Behavioural Objectives : By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to:
i. Describe the processes used in raising a crop.
ii. Briefly explain the planting procedure
iii. Mention some post planting operations.
Previous Knowledge : Learner are familiar some cultural practices and can identify some simple tools used in carrying out the processes.
Content :
After the land had been cleared and processes such as stumping, making of ridges had been done, then the actual Raising of a field crop should be done .
The processes of actual Raising of a field crops are:
i. Planting : This involves the rows spacing, the number of seeds per hole and spaces between plants.
ii. Weeding : This is the regular removal of unwanted plants from the farmland by using several methods such as use of hoes, chemical, mechanical and Cultural.
iii. Thinning and supplying : This involves removal of excess seedling germinating in a hole and adding of additional seedling to a hole that is short of the seed rate required per hole.
iv. Watering: This is the wetting of the plant with water using a watering can or hose at the early stage of the plant before and after germination.
v. Fertilizer application: This involves the application of fertilizer to the farmland in order to improve the fertility of the soil to increase crop yield.
vi. Harvesting: This is the collection of mature crops from the farm using harvester, sickle, harvest g knife, etc.
vii. Processing and preservation : This is an act of changing the form of foods to another . This helps to increase the life span of that food. It makes food available and maintain its qualities.
viii. Storage : This is an act of keeping farm produce from being infected by pests and diseases. It may also be stored to prevent it from being stolen .
ix. Marketing : This is an act of selling farm produce until its get to the final consumer.
Presentation Steps:
Step 1: The teacher revises the previous weeks work with the learners by asking questions orally.
Step 2: He/ she introduces the new topic by explaining how to raise field crops and materials needed and processes involved.
Step 3: He / she then describes the processes involved in raising field crops and identify tools used to carry them out.
Step 4: He/ she then asks the learners to mention the processes required after planting is done.
Evaluation:
The teacher reviews the lesson by asking the following questions :

2. Mention three activities that must be carried out before planting is done.

4. State three things that are considered during planting.

The teacher divides the learners into three groups and asks them to raise maize crop, beans crop and groundnut.
