Online Resources
Instructional Material : Chart showing liked and unlike fractions.
Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Explain liked fractions
ii. Explains the method used in Solving problems on addition of Fractions
iii. Explain subtraction of Fractions with several examples
Content :
Addition and Subtraction of Fractions with same denominator.
Fractions with the same denominators are called like fractions. For example, 1/4 and 2/4, 2/5 and 1/5, 3/7 and 2/7, etc.
Addition of Fractions
When adding two fractions with the same denominators, we pick one of the denominator as Lowest Common Multiples (L. C. M), then add or sum the given numerators.
For examples :
1. 1/3 + 1/3 = (1 + 1)/ 3 = 2/3
2. 3/5 + 1/5 = ( 3 + 1) / 5 = 4/5
3. 4/9 + 3/9 = (4 + 3) / 9 = 7/9
Also, for Subtraction of Fractions we do the same. The difference is the sign of take-away or minus.
When subtracting two fractions with the same denominators, we pick one of the denominator as Lowest Common Multiples (L. C. M), then subtract or minus the given numerators.
For examples:
1. 3/4 – 2/4 = (3 – 2) / 4 = 1/4
2. 5/7 – 3/7 = (5 – 3) / 7 = 2/7
3. 9/13 – 5/13 = (9 – 5) / 13 = 4/13
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking them questions.
Step 2 : Introduces the new topic and explains like fractions and unlike fractions to the learners.
Step 3 : He/ she then explain the process of adding fractions with several examples.
Step 4 : He/ she then explains the method of performing subtraction of Fractions with same denominators.
Evaluation :
