First Term Lesson Note for Week Eight
Class : Primary Three
Subject : Mathematics
Topic : Addition of 2 3-digit numbers with renaming regrouping
Duration : 80 Minutes
Period : Double Period
Reference Book :
- New Method Mathematics for Primary Schools, Book 3.
- Lagos State Unified schemes of work for lower Primary, (Primary 1 – 3).
- Online Resources
Instructional Material : Chart showing the addition of two 3 – digit number in expanded form and composite form.
Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Describe the term addition
ii. Add two 3 – digit numbers with renaming or regrouping.
iii. Add two 3 – digit numbers using expanded form method.
iv. Solve word problems on addition of numbers with renaming or regrouping.
Content :
Addition simply means to count together. It can also be plus, sum, total, and altogether. The sign of addition is (+).
When adding two 3 – digit numbers, we first arrange the numbers under Hundred, tens and unit ( H T U).
Then, we begin our addition from the right hand side under Unit, down to the left which is Hundred.
For example :
Add the following numbers:
1. 347 + 536 = ___________
H T U
3 4 7
+ 5 3 6
________________
8 8 3
________________
2. Add these numbers using expanded form :
454 + 426 = _________
H T U
4 5 4 = 400 + 50 + 4
+ 4 2 6 = 400 + 20 + 6
____________ ___________________
8 8 0 = 800 + 70 + 10 = 880
___________ ____________________
= 800 + (70 + 10) + 0
= 800 + 80 + 0
= 880
3. Find the sum of 378 and 354 using the expanded form method :
3 7 8 = (300 + 70 + 8
3 5 4 = + (300 + 50 + 4)
________ _______________________
600 + 120 + 12
_________ _______________________
Then split : 600 + (100 + 20) + (10 + 2)
= (600 + 100) + (20 + 10) + 2
= 700 + 30 + 2
= 732
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking them questions.
Step 2 : He / she introduces the new topic by explaining addition of numbers to the learners asking them to identify the sign of plus.
Step 3 : Explains that addition, usually begins from the right hand side, which is the unit, then to tens and finally to hundreds.
Step 4 : Explains the addition of numbers with renaming using the expanded form method.
Step 5 : Renaming or regrouping is the re-arranging of the answer by splitting the spill-over from tens to hundreds and from unit to tens respectively, before computing the final answer.
Evaluation :
1. Find the sum of 368 and 423
2. 448 plus 346
3. Add 486 to 252
Use Expanded form method to solve the following :
4. 568 + 316 =
5. 694 + 307 =
Conclusion : At the end of the lesson learners were able to answer the questions correctly. The teacher makes some corrections where necessary.
Assignment :
Solve the following using expanded form method :
1. 415 + 346 =
2. 743 + 249 =
3. 650 + 257 =
