Content :
Animals as living things are things that have life in them. They can move, feed, breathe, grow, reproduce, excrete, respond to change within their surroundings.
All animals including human beings have characteristics that make them living things. These includes :
1. Movement : Animals move from one place to another. They can also move their body parts without necessarily changing their position. For example, ears, hand, leg, head, etc.
2. Respiration : Animals breathe in (inhale) and breathe out (exhale) air. The exchange of air between animals and their surroundings.
3. Nutrition : Animals feed for survival. They depend on ready made food from plants.
4. Irritability : Animals responds to stimuli such as touch and pain.
5. Growth : Animals grow over time. This is the increase in size, height., weight of the animals.
6. Excretion : This is the removal of waste substances from the body. There are different organs in the body of animals used in removing waste. These organs are nose, lungs, kidney, skin.
7. Reproduction : Animals possess the ability to reproduce or give birth to young ones of the same kinds.
Common uses of animals.
1. Animals provides us with meat. For example cow, sheep, goat, fowl, etc.
2. Animals provides us with eggs. For examples, turkey, hen, etc.
3. Animals provide us with wool from their skin known as furs.
4. Hides and skin from animals is used to make leather shoes, bags, belt, etc.
5. Some animal provide us with fat which are used for making candles.
6. Animals provide us with milk.
7. Animals on the farm also provide us manures from their dungs. This helps plants to grow well and supplies the needed nutrients.

Step 1 : Revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking them questions orally.
Step 2 : Introduces the new topic by describing animals as living things using characteristics of living things.
Step 3 : Mentions some common uses of animals with examples.
