Instructional Material : Chart showing area of squares and rectangles using counting of squares and formula methods.
Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Define area and state the unit of area.
ii. Find the area of shapes using counting of small squares method .
iii. Calculate the area of squares and rectangles using formula.
Previous Knowledge : Learners have been taught perimeter of plane shapes.
Content :
Area is the size of a surface. It is the space occupied by a plane shape.
The unit of area is square unit, centimeter square (cm²) or meter square (m²).
Area can be calculated using the following methods:
1. Counting of numbers of squares covering the surfaces of the given shape.
For example :
Finding area of the shape below by counting squares.
2. Using formula :
a.) Rectangle , area = length × breadth
b.) Square, area = length × length
For examples :
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : Revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking them questions on perimeter.
Step 2 : Introduces the new topic by describing area and identify the unit of area.
Step 3 : Find area of shapes using the counting of squares that covers the surfaces of the shape.
Step 4 : Calculate area of squares and rectangle using the formula method. He/ she then solves several examples.
Evaluation :
1. Find the area of the figures shown below by counting squares method:
Conclusion : At the end of the lesson learners were able to answer the questions correctly.
