Topic : Meaning and Importance of Balanced Diet.

Content:
A balanced diet is the diet that contains all the six classes of food in the right proportion.
The six classes of food are:
> Carbohydrate
> Protein
> Fat and oil
> Vitamins
> Mineral salt and
Water
A diet is the food given to animals. It may also be referred to as a ration. Any food or diet is said to be balanced if it contains all the nutrients in the right proportion for the type of animal and for the purpose for which the animal is kept.
The above is a pyramid of balanced diet.
The food charts above is used to show how a balanced diet meal can be taken.
Eat these in moderation of two or three portions a day. These foods provide us with calcium, zinc and vitamins. Lower fat versions such as skimmed milk can be a good choice.
For example, the balanced diet for non-ruminants animals (one-stomach animals) such as pig, rabbits, poultry is not necessarily balanced for ruminants animals ( complex stomach animals) such as goat, cow sheep, etc.
Also, the balanced diet for young animals may not be balanced for the weaner, grower of the same animals. A weaner is an animal being separated from its mother.
Importance of Balanced Diet
Balanced diet is very essential to life in so many ways. These include:
i. Balanced diet cause a better growth.
It provides energy
iii. It enables the animal to maintain good health
iv. It helps the animal to build up resistance to pests and diseases.
(A pest is an organism that can cause damage to crop.
A disease is an abnormal condition or state of ill-health (sickness) in animal.
v. It enables the animal to have good efficiency in converting the feed into animal products.
vi. It also enables the animal to make good body functions.
Presentation steps
Step I: The teacher revises the previous topic or lesson taught with the learners by asking questions to catch their attention.
Step II: He / She introduces the new topic by asking the learners, ” What is balanced diet?”
Step III: He/ She then explains the meaning of balanced diet and list the classes of food that makes it up.
Step IV: He/ She then states the importance of balanced diet.
