Third Term Lesson Note for Week Six.
Class: Basic 2
Subject: Mathematics
Topic:Capacity (Meaning of capacity, Identifying and naming objects used for measuring capacity)
Duration : 80 minutes
Period : Double Periods
Reference Book :
- New Method Mathematics for Primary Schools, Book 2, by Learn Africa.
- Lagos State Unified Schemes of Work for Primary Schools , (Primary 1 – 3 )
- Online Resources
Instructional Material : Chart showing measures of capacity in litres.
Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Explain meaning of capacity
ii. Identify and name object used for measuring capacity.
Learning table of measures on capacity
Content :
Capacity can be defined as amount of substances or liquid a container can hold.
To measure capacity, we use “holds more than or holds less than”.
Capacity Table
10 millilitres (ml) = 1 centilitre (cl)
10 centilitres (cl) = 1 decilitre (dm)
10 decilitres (dm) = 1 litre (l)
100 Centilitres = 1 Litre
Objects used for measuring capacity are :
1. Jug
2. Kettle
3. Cooking pot
4.Tea cup/ glass cup
5. water flask
6. water tank
7. Bucket e.t.c.
Comparing capacity of different container.
For example :
1. How many cups of water can fill up a jug?
2. How many jug of water can fill up a bucket?
Presentation Steps
Step 1 : Revision of the previous lesson learnt with the learners on measures of weight.
Step 2 : Introduces the new topic by explaining the meaning of capacity and state it units
Step 3 : Discusses how to measure capacity and identify object used in measuring capacity.
Step 4 : Compare capacity of different object or container to know how many it can hold.
Evaluation Questions:
Write “holds more than or holds less than” in the spaces below.
Example
Water drum (holds more than) bucket.
1. water bottle _______________ glass cup.
2. Tea cup ________________ water flask.
3. Spoon _________________ bottle of syrup.
4. Kettle _______________ jug.
5. Water tank _______________ bowl.
6. Pot ____________________ water drum.
7. Tea cup __________________ glass cup.
8. Spoon ___________________ bucket.
Conclusion : The teacher reviews the lesson by explaining all over again for a better understanding .
