Behavioural Objectives : By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to :
i. Describe the mouth and identify its components
ii. Identify and mention materials used for cleaning the mouth
iii. State the effect of the lack of caring for the teeth
Content:
The mouth is part of the face that is used for eating, drinking and speaking. It is made up of different parts which are:
i. The upper and lower lips;
ii. The teeth and
iii. The tongue.
The teeth helps in crushing and grinding of the food, while the tongue rolls it into ball-like shape for easy swallowing. The lips helps to protect the food from falling off from the mouth.
Materials for caring for the mouth and teeth.
The materials for caring for the teeth and mouth are classified into two groups namely:
i. Traditional mouth cleaning materials:- charcoal, salt, cotton wool, chewing stick, ashes,
ii. Modern mouth cleaning materials:- tooth paste, tooth brush, mouth wash, mouth spray, clean water
Lack of care of the mouth and teeth.
When we fail to care for our teeth and mouth properly, it may result in the following:
i. Bad breath
ii. Mouth odour
iii. Tooth decay
iv. Bleeding of the gums
v. Decoloration of the teeth
Presentation Step:
Step 1: The teacher revises the previous topic with the learners by asking questions orally. This help to arouse the learners interest.
Step 2: He / she introduces the new topic to the learner by asking them to describe the mouth as part of the body.
Step 3: The teacher then asked the learners to list the items used for caring for the mouth and teeth.
Step 4: He/ she then asked the learners to mention some of the effects of lack of proper care for the teeth and mouth.
