Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Identify the causes of Common illnesses .
ii. Mention ways of controlling the common illnesses.
Previous Knowledge : Learners have been taught common illness and examples of the common illnesses.
Content :
The common illnesses around us are malaria , typhoid fever, cholera, dysentery, diarrhoea, sleeping sickness, measles, chicken pox, etc.
Causes of the common illnesses.
1. Malaria : This is an illness caused by bites from mosquitoes.
2. Typhoid fever : This is the illness caused as a result of infection from eating and drinking contaminated water.
3. Cholera : This is the illness caused by drinking dirty and contaminated water. This can lead to stomach upset, stooling and vomiting.
4. Sleeping sickness : This is caused by a bite from Tse-Tse fly. It is common among human and farm animals.
5. Dysentery : This is an illness caused as a result of eating contaminated food and when the environment is dirty.
Generally, illnesses are caused by bacteria , viral infections through the following ways:
1. Living in a dirty, dusty and polluted environment.
2. Drinking unclean water.
3. Eating contaminated or rotten foods.
4. Stagnant water or dirty gutter not flowing.
5. Eating too much sweets and biscuits
6. Exposing ourself to cold weather.
7. Bites from insects such as mosquitoes, Tse-Tse flies and other animals like dogs, snakes, etc.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking questions orally .
Step 2 : Introduces the new lesson by explaining the causes of some common illnesses.
Step 3 : Mention ways of controlling illness.
Step 4 : Give room for questions from the learners and explain more for a better understanding.
