Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. State the characteristics of plants
ii. Identify types of plants based on their habitats
Content :
Plants are living things that grow on the soil.
Plants have basic part such as roots, stem, leaves, fruit, and seeds.
Characteristics of plants
1. Plants produce their own food through photosynthesis (nutrition)
2. Plants can move from one place to another either by wind, water or human involvement.
3. Plants can breathe. Plant breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. (Respiration)
4. They can grow, that is increase in size(Growth).
5. They can reproduce it young ones of the same kind. This is called Reproduction.
6. Plants can respond to touch and sensation. This is known as Irritability.
7. Plants can release waste product from their body into the environment. This is called Excretion.
8. Plants can die.
Plants can be grouped into different classes based on two :
1. Colour : Green plants and Non-green plants (flowering plants)
2. Usage : herbs, food, raw materials
3. Sizes : trees, shrubs and grasses (tall, medium, short)
4. Structures : Vascular and non-vascular plants
Uses of plants.
i. Plant is used as food.
ii. Plant is used for medicine, for example herbs.
iii. Plant is used as shelter. It serves as home of some animal, e.g. birds, monkeys, etc.
iv. Plant is used for firewood in cooking.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : Revision of the previous topic taught with the learners by asking questions orally.
Step 2 : Introduction of the new topic by describing characteristics of plants
Step 3 : Identify types of plants and their classes based on colour, habitats, size, etc.
Step 4 : State the uses of plants
