Content:
Drugs are substances that is taken into the body to cure diseases and illness. Examples of drugs are paracetamol, cough syrup, iodine, methylated spirit.
Common drugs are the substances that can be easily found at the medicine stores in our locality. They are used to cure minor illnesses such as headache, stomach ache, and minor injury.
The common drugs can be in form of
i. Syrup – This is a drug in liquid form. Examples of syrup are cough syrup, blood tonics, paracetamol and ampicillin syrup.
ii. Tablets – These are drugs in solid form and it comes in different shapes. Examples are paracetamol tablet , vitamin C tablet, Aspirin
iii. Capsules – These are medicine in powdered form.
iv. Powdered drugs- These are drugs in powder form put in sachets. Examples are Alábùkún, laila, Karaole, After five.
v. Ointments – These are drugs smooth like grease (pomade) that are rubbed on the skin to heal a wound or sore. Examples are balms antiseptic creams and embrocation.
vi. Injection- These are liquids drugs passed into the body with the use of needle and syringe.
People who can administer or give drugs:
Children should not take any drugs or medicine without the consent of their parents, guardian or medical personnel.
The following are allowed to give drugs to people or their children:
- Our Parents
- Our Guardians
- Our Teachers
- The nurses
- The doctors
- The pharmacists
Ways of taking drugs
Drugs can be taken into the body in many different ways
i. Swallowing: This is a method of taking tablets.
ii. Drinking: This is used in taking drugs in liquid form.
Injecting: This involves taking of drugs in liquid form with the use of needle and syringe. e. g. Antibiotic drugs such as Ciprofloxacin, ampiclux, pyritin
Inhaling: This is the drugs in gaseous form inhaled through the nose. e. g. Vicks inhaler, asthma inhaler.
Rubbing: These are medicine in the form of cream, applied to the skin directly. Examples are embrocation, deep relief cream, menthylathon, etc.
Presentation Step:
Step 1: The teacher revises the previous topic with the learners by asking questions orally.
Step 2: He/ she introduces the new topic by asking the learner to define drugs and give examples
Step 3: The teacher then describe the different types of of drugs based on them forms and mentions several examples.
Step 4: States the various methods of taking drugs and identifies who can administer or gives drugs to the children to use.
