Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to
i. Explain who is a leader and give examples.
ii. Identify the leaders of the three ethnic groups in Nigeria .
Content :
All communities have Leaders.
Leaders guide and lead other members of the community. They also help to maintain peace and order in the community. Without this leadership, the community would be a lawless place.
For example, in the Nigerian setting, the oba is a leader in the Yoruba community.
In the Hausa community, we have the Emir and Sarki. The Igbo have the Eze and the Obi as their is leader.
Community leader are men and women who have authority in our communities. For example :
The leader of our school is the headmistress or headmaster.
The leader of our church is the pastor.
The leader of our mosque is the imam.
The leader of our community is the local government chairman.
The leader of our state is the governor.
The leader of our country is the president.
Qualities of community leaders
1. A good leader makes sure everything in the community works well.
2. A good leader helps people in the community solve their problems.
3. A good leader makes sure people obey the rules of the community.
4. A good leader must be intelligent and wise.
5. A good leader must be patient and not get easily angry.
6. A good leader must be innovative, that is, always bringing new ideas to develop the community.
