Content :
MEANING OF COMPOST/MANURE
Compost is a mixture of decaying vegetation and manure (animals and plants) used as a fertilizer.
Compost improves plants food and makes the crop to grow well.
LOCATION OF THE COMPOST
We should consider the following before preparing compost.
1. A source of water should be close by.
2. The ground should be a level and well drained.
3. It should be close to the farm garden.
4. It should be close to where materials for preparing compost will be collected.
5. There should be some shade to prevent intense sunlight from drying up the heap.
6. The compost should be store in a cemented with an overhead cover.
MATERIALS FOR MAKING COMPOST
To make compost, the following materials are needed and must be made available :
i. Water
ii. Plant garbage
iii. Animal muck
iv. Food waste (Kitchen waste)
v. Little Wood ash (saw dust)
vi. Dried flower and leaves from the farmland
vii. Weed without seed
METHODS Of MAKING COMPOST.
Compost can be made using two different ways. These are :
- Pit method
- Heap Method
STEPS IN MAKING COMPOST (PIT METHOD)
The following are steps for preparing compost using pit method.
Dig four pits labeled A, B, C and D. of equal sizes. Then arrange the materials for making compost in layer separated by soil in pit A (Loading pit) and wet with water for easy decomposition. Turn it over to pit B After two weeks. Repeat processes for every one week until it is into pit D. The Compost is ready to use.

Step 1 : The Teacher revises the previous lesson (Ways of making soil fertile).
Step 2 : The Teacher introduces the topic by explaining the meaning of Compost Manure
Step 3 : The Teacher list the materials for making Compost Manure.
Step 4 : Identify the various methods used in making Compost.
