Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Explain the meaning of conjunctions
ii. Mention examples of conjunctions.
iii. Identify conjunctions in any given sentences.
Content :
A Conjunction is a word which is used to join two words or sentences together.
Examples of conjunctions are : and, but, also, because, yet, while, until, unless, so, or, for, etc.
Conjunctions are used to join words :
1. That have the same function.
Examples : “and”
i. We bought apples, oranges and pawpaw from the market.
ii. Bola and I are friends.
iii. He is neat and clever.
2. That have a choice.
Examples : “or”
i. Is that a fish or meat?
ii. Would you like an apple or an orange
3. To show opposite meaning.
Examples : “but”
i. He is sick but does not want to go to the clinic.
ii. We saw her but she did not see us.
iii. I have a book but don’t have a pen.
4. To show reason, e.g. “as”, “because”
I could not come because it was raining.
I broke the cup because I was angry.
5. To show condition.
He will succeed if he works hard.
6. To show result. E. G. So
They slept early so they woke up early.
7. To express two contrasting facts.
E.g. Although he is poor, he is happy.
8. That join two words, phrases, clauses or sentences.
E.g. Neither my sister nor my brother likes to play tennis.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1: The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking them questions orally
Step 2 : He/ she introduces the new lesson to the learners by asking, ” what is conjunction?”
Step 3 : After several attempt by the learners, the teacher then gives a simple definition of conjunctions.
Step 4 : The teacher leads the learners to mention examples of conjunctions
Step 5 : The teacher then state the uses of various conjunctions with examples. He then writes out some sentences and calls the learners to identify and underline the conjunctions in the given sentences.

7. I could not see the board as the teacher stood in front of me.
CONCLUSION : At the end of the lesson, learners were able to answer the questions correctly. The teacher marks their Note and makes corrections where necessary.
