Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Define Conjunctions with several examples
ii. State types of conjunctions and describes them with their various examples.
iii. Identify conjunctions and its types in sentences.
Previous Knowledge : Learners have been taught articles and types of articles.
Content :
Conjunctions are words used to link up or join words, phrases, clauses and sentences together.
Examples of conjunctions are : and, but, besides, so, consequently, although, since, because, for, as, either … or, both while when, unless, so that, etc.
Types of Conjunctions
There are different types of conjunctions based on usage. These are:
1. Conjunctions that shows similarity or Close relationship. For example : and , also, besides, as well as, both , etc.
i. Mary and John are best of friends.
ii. Besides playing the piano, she also plays the violin.
2. Conjunctions that shows contrast. For example : but, yet, still, though, although, etc.
i. If you hurry, you may still catch the bus.
ii. Bisi ìs intelligent but she is extremely lazy.
3. Conjunctions that shows a reason for an action. For example : as, for, since, because, etc.
i. He went to bed early as he was tired.
ii. They were punished because they were naughty.
4. Conjunctions that shows the result of an action . For examples : so, therefore, consequently, as a result, etc.
i. As a result of her hard work, she did very well in her exams.
ii. Mum had a toothache, so she went to see the dentist.
5. Conjunctions that express similarity between two or more ideas. For example : both … and, neither … nor, either … or, etc.
i. Both Jide and Aminu are in my class.
ii. Neither Ibrahim nor I will be going for the seminar.
6. Conjunctions that link two events that are going on at the same time . For examples : as, when, while, etc.
i. Hassan fainted when he heard the sad news.
ii. The lights went out while I was doing my homework.
7. Conjunctions that shows the purpose of an action. For examples : in order to, so that, etc.
i. She worked hard so that she would do well in her examinations.
ii. We must eat good food in order to be healthy.
8. Conjunctions that show condition. For example : or else, unless, etc.
i. “You cannot see the dentist today unless you have an appointment,” said the nurse.
ii. “You must submit your books by tomorrow or else I will not correct them,” warned the teacher.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : Revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking questions orally.
Step 2 : Introduces the new Lesson by defining conjunctions and give examples .
Step 3 : Mentions type of conjunctions with examples.
Step 4 : Identify conjunctions in sentences and state the types of conjunctions.
Evaluation :
