Previous Knowledge : Learners have been taught apostrophes and it uses.
Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Explain the meaning of contractions
ii. Identify some words and their contractions
iii. Use the contracted words in making simple sentences.
Content :
Contractions simply means to shorten a given words. It is formed by introducing an apostrophe to the word and removing letter or letters.
For example :
I am = I’ m
You are = You ‘re
He is = He’ s
We will = We’ ll
I have = I’ ve
Contractions can also be used to shorten negative statement or expressions.
Foe example :
Is not = isn’ t
Was not = wasn’t
Shall not = shan’t
Will not = won’t
He does not = He doesn’t
She has not = She hasn’t
These are examples of contactions in sentences.
She cannot swim. = She can’t swim.
He does not like it. ==> He doesn’t like it.
I will soon go home. ==> I ‘ll soon go home.
You have not swept the floor this afternoon.
You haven’ t swept the floor this afternoon.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking questions
Step 2 : He/ she introduces the lesson by explaining the meaning of contractions
Step 3 : The teacher guides the learners on how to form contractions with several examples
Step 4 : The learners identify contracted words in the sentence and pronounce them with the guide of their teacher.
