Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
I. Explain the meaning of direct speech
ii. Identify the features of direct speech
iii. Give examples of direct speech
Instructional Material : Chart showing examples of direct speech
previous knowledge : Learners have been taught verbs and their various forms.
Content :
Direct Speech is simply the exact words of a speaker in a sentence. The original words used by the speaker is placed under the quotation mark. The direct speech is also called Quoted speech.
For example
- Kofi said, ” I want to eat rice.”
- Sam said, “we are tired.”
- Jane said, ” I shall go to Lagos tomorrow.”
- “Nigeria is in West Africa,” the teacher said.
- “Run to the field!” the coach told the players.
- Tobi said, ” I have paid my school fees.”
Note that the commas, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks come before the quotation marks. That is, they are all inside the quotation mark.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking them questions orally. This will help to arouse their interest.
Step 2 : He / she introduces the new topic by explaining the meaning of direct speech
Step 3 : He/she then gives several examples of direct speech in different verb forms.
Step 4 : He/she then gives the learners some sentences to identify whether it is a direct speech or indirect speech.
Evaluation / Assessment :
State whether the sentences below are Direct Speech or Indirect Speech.
- “My biro is on the table,” said Miss Jumoke.
- Justina asked Stella if she had seen the headteacher.
- “I ‘m glad that you are here,” the nurse told the doctor.
- Kingsley told Seun that his father travelled the previous day.
- “Can you drive this car?” Mrs. Idegwu asked Miss Moshood.
- “The time now is eight o’ clock,” said Peter.
- The policeman ordered the driver not to move.
- Comfort said, “These books are mine.”
Conclusion /Wrap up : The teacher summarizes the lesson for a better understanding. He makes the necessary corrections and marks the learners notes.
