Content :
Domestic animals are species of animals that have lived in the homes and environments of humans for so many years.
Domesticated animals are animals that are raised and cared for by humans. They are kept as pets, for example birds, fish, goats and rabbits. Dogs and cats are the most common domestic animal.
Wild animals are animals that are dangerous and found mostly in deep forest. Examples of wild animals are crocodile, fox, leopard, lion, tiger, etc.
Some wild animals are carnivores while some are herbivores. They can be referred to as predators because they kill and eat up younger animals of a different species.
Different people keep different kinds of domestic animals in order to meet their different needs. Pets are one type of domestic animal, and they differ from others because of the specialities that they possess. People have been able to domesticate a variety if animals that provide numerous functions for us.
Domestication includes three types known as:
- Companionship
- Livestock
- Working animals
Differences between pet animals, domestic animals and domestic livestock and working animals.
A. Pet animals
They are kept for companionship and recreation
These are animals that have very limited or no economic benefits
These animals are always household animals
There is a strong relationship with the owner
Transmission of diseases into humans is common as there is often direct contact, allergies and even life threatening diseases like rabies.
Examples of pets include dogs, cats, rodents, spiders, birds and sometimes snakes.
B. Domestic animals
They are kept for economic benefits as well as recreation
These animals are always economically beneficial
These animals are not always household animals
The relationship with the owner is not as strong as in pets.
Transmission of diseases to humans is not common.
C. Domestic livestock and working animals
Livestock such as chicken were domesticated for producing products such as eggs and meat
Livestock such as sheep, cattle and goats are domesticated for milk, meat and wool.
Horses are used for meat their hide for transportation and in war.
Donkeys and camels are used to transport loads.
Oxen are domestic animals that are used foe ploughing and transportation.
