Content :
Drugs are substances taken into the body to cure and relieve us of our sickness and pains. Drugs are also called medicine. Some drugs help us feel better, but when misuse can also harm us.
Drugs are classified into two broad groups based on their sources. Some drugs are gotten from plants while some are from animals. These drugs are being processed to form different kinds.
We have two types of sources of drugs :
i. Natural drugs : These are drugs gotten from extraction of plants. They are referred to as herbs. The parts of a plant such as root, leaves, stems and back of trees are boiled or soaked in water, palm wine or alcohol (ogogoro) . Examples of plants used as medicine are dongo – yarọ, bitter leaf, lemon grass, moringa, etc.
ii. Synthetic drugs : These are drugs that have undergone chemical processes to transform the extract from plant parts into tablets, capsules, syrups, oral suspension, injections. Examples are paracetamol, Valium 5, analgesic, benelyn cough syrup, ciprotab, amoxillin, panadol, flagyl, vitamin c, etc.
Most oof these drugs are used in different ways :
a. by swallowing,
b. Inhaling
c. Rubbing the skin
d. Injected through the veins
e. Drinking
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking them questions orally. This will help to arouse the interest of the learners.
Step 2 : He/she introduces the new topic to the learners by asking the questions, “what is drug?”
Step 3 : The teacher then list and explain the classifications of drugs with examples.
Step 4 : He/she then asks the learners to mention some of the drugs they use at home and classify them into natural and synthetic drugs.
