Content :
Early Heroes in Nigeria .
Early Heroes were men who made great achievements in the pre-colonial period. There achievement were seen before and during the coming of the Europeans and Arabs. They were found in different parts of Nigeria.
Some of these early Heroes are :
1. Jaja of Opobo
2. Ọba Ovoranmwen of Benin
3. Muhammadu Rán fà Of Kano
4. Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther
5. Nana Olomu of Itsekiri
Jaja of Opobo : Jaja was an Igbo. He was born in 1821 in Amaigbo near Orlu. He was a freed slave boy sold to a Bonny Chief trader. Jaja eventually won his liberty after years of fighting against his wrongful abduction, and it was agreed by the Parliament that he could be repatriated to his Kingdom State of Opobo. Jaja now well advanced in age longed to see his beloved Opobo land again.m. King Jaja died in 1891 en route Tenerife, Canary Islands at the age of 70 years. It was alleged that he was poisoned through tea. He was buried on the Canary Islands, but his people protested and his body was exhumed and reburied in Opobo.
Ọba Ovonramwen of Benin (ruled 1888–1897), also called Overami, was the Ọba (king) of the Kingdom of Benin up until the British punitive expedition of 1897. Born circa 1857, he was the son of Ọba Adọlọ. He took the name Ovọnramwẹn Nọgbaisi at his enthronement in 1888. He built a house called Owigho (Bank). He also invented ivory flutes and introduced Odudua Masquerade. Oba Ovonramwen was the last independent Oba to reign before Benin Kingdom fell to British forces during the Benin Punitive Expedition of 1897. The kingdom was destroyed and looted of its many valuable artifacts. Ovonramwen was exiled to Calabar with his two of his wives, Queen Egbe and Queen Aighobahi, and died there around the turn of the new year in 1914. Ovonramwen was eventually buried in the grounds of the royal palace in Benin City.
Samuel Ajayi Crowther (c. 1809 – 31 December 1891), was a Yoruba, Linguist, clergyman and the first African Anglican bishop of West Africa. Born in Osogun (Ado-Awaye, Oyo State, Nigeria), he and his family were captured by slave raiders when he was about twelve years old. This took place during the Yoruba civil wars, notably the Owu wars of 1821–1829, where his village Osogun was sacked. Ajayi was later on resold to Portuguese slave dealers where he was put on board to be transported to the New World through the Atlantic. As a teen, he was abducted into slavery then traded and sold a number of times before being rescued by Anglican missionaries. He went on to become an explorer, translator, and abolitionist.
