Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Define Early Heroes
ii. Identify and list some early Heroes in Nigeria.
iii. Mention some attributes of Heroes in Nigeria.
Previous Knowledge : Learners are familiar with heroes and heroines.
Content :
Early Heroes were men who made great achievement in the pre-colonial period. Their achievement were seen before and during the coming of Europeans and the Arabs.
A hero is a man who is admired for his courage, outstanding achievements or noble qualities.
A hero must have these qualities : Courage, Humility, Patience, Honesty Confidence, selflessness, integrity, etc.
Some examples of heroes in Nigeria are:
1. Alhaji Tafawa Balewa
2. Sir Ahmadu Bello
3. Nana Olomu of Itsekiri
4. Jaja of Opobo
5. Ọba Ovonramwen of Benin, etc.
Attributes of Heroes in Nigeria.
1. They serve as role models in the society.
2. They promote the growth of their society.
3. They help the society when in danger.
a. Herbert Macaulay :
He is considered as the father of nationalism as he made people come together to fight for freedom from the British rule. He died in the year 1946 due to illness. His image adorns the one naira note.
b. Sir Ahmadu Bello :
He fought for Nigeria’s Independence. His portrait adorns the 200 naira note. The Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria is named after him. He was killed on January 15th 1966.
c. General Yakubu Gowon :
A military hero that kept Nigeria as one country. He was the head of state in Nigeria in 1966. He created 12 states in 1967. He is currently 89 years old.
d. Chief Anthony Enahoro :
He was the first person to move the motion for Nigeria’s independence in 1953. He died at the age of 87 in 2010.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking questions orally, so as to arouse the learners for Lesson.
Step 2 : He/ she introduces the new lesson by asking the learners, “who is an hero?”
Step 3 : The teacher welcomes several definitions from the learners and gives them a well detailed definitions and mentions some attributes of an hero.
Step 4: He/ she then list examples of early Heroes in Nigeria and mentions roles played by those mentioned.
Evaluation :
1. Define an hero.
2. List four examples of early Heroes in Nigeria.
3. Mention two attributes of an hero.
Conclusion : At the end of the lesson, learners were able to answer the questions correctly.
