Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Identify the effects of Drug Abuse.
ii. State ways of avoiding drug abuse.
Previous Knowledge : Learners have been taught categories of drugs .
Content :
Drugs are to be taken when people are ill. They should be taken under the guidance of a doctor. When we do not this, we involve in drug abuse, which is dangerous to our well-being .
Effects of Drug Abuse
1. Mental illness : if someone engages in abuse of drugs , he / she can run mad. This is because the wrong drugs taken may affect the brain.
2. Accident : If anyone takes drug without the advice of a doctor, he / she become sleepy or troubled in other ways. If such a person drives or uses the road, it may lead to accident.
3. Addiction : This is when a person cannot do without taking a drug. For example, some believe that without drug they cannot do heavy job or sleep. They are use to the drugs and are called addicts.
4. Dropping out of school : Taking of drugs or abuse of drugs can affect the academic performance of the students. He /she may start behaving like thugs at the motor park, taking alcohol and smoking Indian hemp as well as cigarette. It results in getting poor marks all the time. This can make him / her run away from school or expelled by the school authority.
5. Death : Excessive use of any drugs can lead to death. Pain reliever is a drug we take whenever we are feeling pains.
Ways of preventing drug abuse.
1. Avoid self-medication : This means we should not take drugs without doctors recommendations.
2. Avoid buying drugs or medicine from drug sellers that are not registered.
3. Avoid bad friends who abuse drugs.
4. Avoid use of expired drugs.
5. Do not take drugs because your friends are taking them.
6. Get advice from a doctor, nurse or your parents before taking or using any drugs.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : Revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking questions on categories of drugs.
Step 2 : Introduces the new topic by identifying and explaining the effects of Drug abuse.
Step 3 : He /she states ways of avoiding drug abuse.
