Duration: 40 Minutes
Period: Single Period
Reference Book : Agricultural Science for Primary Schools, Book 3
Lagos State Unified Schemes of Work for Primary Schools (Primary 1 – 3)
Online Resources
Instructional Material : Chart showing the elements found in protein
Behavioural Objectives : By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to :
i. Identify the elements present in Proteins.
ii. State the functions of proteins
iii. Mention the unit of protein and describe how it is absorbed.
Content:
Proteins are body building foods that repairs and replace worn-out tissues in the body.
The elements found in Proteins consists of the following :
1. Nitrogen (N)
2. Carbon (C)
3. Sulphur (S)
4. Traces of Oxygen (O)
5. Hydrogen (H) and
6. Phosphorus (P)
Functions of Proteins
- Dietary proteins are powerful compounds that build and repair the body tissues.
- They help in maintaining the body’s structure, speeds up chemical reactions in the body.
- They serve as chemical messengers, fight infection and transport oxygen from lungs to the body tissues.
Proteins are made up of smaller units called amino acid. There are up to 20 amino acids. Our bodies requires eight or nine of them to maintain health. Amino acids is absorbed into the blood stream and sent to the cells that need them.
Presentation Steps:
Step 1: The teacher revises the previous lesson taught with the learners by asking questions orally.
Step 2: He/she introduces the new topic by asking the learners to identify the elements found in Proteins.
Step 3: The teacher then explains the functions of proteins and how it is absorbed into the body
Step 4: He/she mentions the unit of proteins.
Evaluation:
1. Body building foods are also called _________
2. Mention any four elements that makes up proteins:
i. ____________________ ii. _____________________
iii. ___________________ iv. _____________________
3. The smallest units of protein are called ________________.
4. Protein speed up the rate of chemical reactions. (True, False)
Conclusion: At the end of the lesson, learners were able to answer the questions correctly.
Assignment:
State two basic functions of proteins.
i. _____________________________________________
ii. ____________________________________________
2. Amino acids can be obtained from ________________
3. ____________ transport _____________ from the ______________ to the body tissues.
