Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to
i. Identify the elements of culture.
ii. Explain the elements of culture.
iii. Compare the elements of culture among the different tribes in Nigeria.
Previous Knowledge : Learners are familiar with meaning of culture.
Content :
Culture includes the language people speak, the food they eat, their dressing, etc.
Every tribe or community has its own culture which is passed on from one generation to another.
1. Hair style is away a particular hair is done. It involves adding of adornment such as beads, chains and rings.
As there are different tribes and cultures in Nigeria, there are also different from Hausa and Yoruba hair styles.
2. Dressing : In Nigeria, there are different ways we dress. The way an Hausa man dresses is different from that of a Yoruba man. The way an Igbo man will dress also different from the Hausa and Yoruba man.
Nigerians wear foreign clothes especially those with white collar jobs and some wear indigenous attires like agbada, dandogo, dashiki, iro and buba, etc. The Igbo women also wear gorge and wrappers, while Yoruba wear Iro and buba. The materials used in sewing the attires are different.
For example :
Yoruba : Aso-oke, Guinea, Lace, Kampala
Igbo : gorge, Akpoche, Net cord lace.
Hausa : Guinea, Teru, wool materials.
3. Food : In Nigeria, there are different food eaten by different culture. For examples :
Tuwo Shinkafa is eaten by Hausa people
Amala and Ewedu soup, Ebiripo, Ikokore, eaten by Yoruba
Edikaikon soup, Afam, eaten by Calabar people
Pounded yam with Egusi soup, Onugbu, Ogbono and vegetable soup, Banga (palm kernel) soup eaten by Igbo people.
We have Ijebu garri, yellow garri, Tuwo from maize or rice, semovita, starch, etc. The different tribes has various methods of preparing them.
4. Festivals : There are different festival celebrated by the different tribes in Nigeria. These are New yam festival, Egungun festival, Eyo festival, Argungun fishing festival, etc.
New yam festival is common among the Igbo people
Egungun and Eyo festival is mostly common among the Yoruba tribes.
Argungun fishing festival is common among the Hausa tribe.
5. Religion : In Nigeria, there are three major religions, Christian, Islamic and Traditional.
Christians worship in the church. They use the Holy Bible, and some uses chaplet, candle for prayers.
Muslims worship in the mosque. They make use of Holy Quran and also use chaplet for prayers
Traditional worshippers worship in the shrine. They also use different things to worship their God’s and deity. Some uses water, palm oil, kolanut, cowry, gin, etc.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : Revision of the previous lesson with the learners.
Step 2 : Introduces the new topic to the learners by asking them to mention element of culture.
Step 3 : Explain the elements of culture and give examples.
Step 4 : Compare the different elements of culture among the different tribes in Nigeria.
