Previous Knowledge : Learners have been taught meaning of National Symbols and examples

 

Reference Materials :  Civic Education for primary schools, NERDC New Edition, Book 3., Online Resources.

 

Instructional Materials : charts showing a flag, coat of arm, currency, and constitution.

 

Behavioural Objectives: By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to :

i. Explain the meaning of national identity;

ii. List elements of national identity.
CONTENT: 
Meaning of National Identity
National identity refers to the common symbols, actions and behaviours that a particular country is known for, which are also generally accepted by its citizens.
It also refers to the sense of belonging that citizens have for their country. This is shown by their willingness to agree and support the growth and development of the country and everything it stands for, such as its national symbols, national colour, traditions, culture, food, clothing, music, politics, arts, language, religion, history of the nation, etc.
For example, our official national colour is the colour of our national flag, which is green, white, green. Nigerians are easily identified by these colours in most events they feature. e. g. football, races, etc.
Elements of National Identity
To keep the country united, it is important for the country to adopt some common identities or symbols, colours, actions and behaviours that would help in creating what is called national consciousness.
Some elements of national identity include:
1. The national anthem: This is an element of national identity which all citizens must respect by standing at attention  when singing it in any occasion.
2. Citizenship of a nation: This is an element of national identity which gives people the legal right of being a citizen. Citizens of a country must behave in a responsible and acceptable manner as well as be willing to accept the responsibilities attached to citizenship.
3. Payment of taxes: This is an element of national identity that creates awareness on the payment of tax. It is the legal responsibility of all citizens who are working for government or private organisations or doing their own businesses to pay tax. This tax helps the government to provide and pay for public services such as good roads, electricity, clean water, etc.
4. Working for the success of the nation: This element of national identity encourages citizens to work together in love and unity in order to ensure the growth and development of the country. They can do this by participating in some general activities such as environmental sanitation exercise monthly, tree planting activity, national sports competitions, etc.
5. Respecting national symbols: This element of national identity lists the country important national symbols and teaches citizens how to respect them by protecting, caring for and maintaining them. Examples of national symbols that must be respected are national flag, national anthem, mace, constitution, currency, national identity card, etc.
6. Being proud of one’s country: This element of national identity describes the ways citizens demonstrate their love for the country by holding the national symbols in high esteem anywhere they go and in whatever they do.
Being proud of one’s country will arouse the love, patriotism and allegiance the citizens have for the country.

PRESENTATION: 

Step 1: The teacher revises the previous topic taught with the learners.

Step 2: He/ She introduces the new topic

Step 3: He / She explains the lesson to the learners based on the stated objectives

Step 4: He/ She makes the lesson to be interactive with group discussions

Step 5: He / She then rap up the lesson by emphasizing on the salient points.

 

EVALUATION:

The teacher reviews the lesson by asking the following questions:

1. Explain what you understand by the term ‘national identity’. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2. Mention three elements of national identity:

_______________________________________, ________________________________________ ________________________________________

3. List five examples of national symbols: ___________________, __________________, ____________________, _________________ and _________________.

Conclusion: At the end of the lesson, learners were able to answer the questions correctly, while the teacher makes some corrections where necessary.
