There are different kinds of scientists. There are scientists who study how the stars move. There are those who are interested in agriculture and helping to find ways in which to grow trees.
But how does a scientist work? How does he discover things? Well, a scientist spends a lot of time in training. He learns how to observe, to look carefully at what goes around him. He learns how to experiment and how to write write down his results.
A good example of a scientist at work is Dr. Okafor who studies and tries to develop a breadfruit which is four feet (1.2m) high above the ground. This variety, as you know, is very different from the tall breadfruit trees that you usually see on farms.
Dr. Okafor works with the Forestry Development Investigation Branch of the Forestry Commission in Enugu. He is developing a crop breeding program me in order to produce new and better types of some of our well-known trees. Many of the new breeds bear more fruits and start producing earlier than the older ones we all know.
He has a farm where he plants, experiments, observes and writes down his findings. These findings are very useful to the government, other scientists and farmers.
