Plants generally are made up of stems, root, leaves, flowers and fruits. Theses comes in different sizes and shapes.
A flowering plant has two important parts called
1. Root system and
2. Shoot system.
1. The Root : This is the part of plant that grows under the soil. It holds the plant firmly and help plant to get nutrient and water from the soil. Root stores food in some plants and are called storage roots. Examples are cassava, potato, carrot and cocoyam.
2. Stem : This is the part of plant that grows above the ground. It bears the branches, flowers, leaves and fruits. It supports the plant. It also helps carry water and nutrients from the roots to other parts of the plant. It holds the leaves in a way to help them receive sunlight. A woody stem is called Trunk.
3. Leaves : Most leaves are green in colour. The green colour is due to the presence of chlorophyll. It helps plant to manufacture it food by turning sunlight into food energy through the process of photosynthesis.
4. Flowers : Plants that have flowers are called flowering plants. The flower forms the fruits of the plant. Most flowers have bright Colours and are very beautiful with pleasant smell which attract insects like bees and butterflies.
5. Fruit : This is a seed bearing part of a flowering plant. It can be eaten as food by man and animals. Examples are mango, orange, cherry, banana, coconut, etc.
