Content :
In Lagos, there are different festivals celebrated. These are in honor of the culture and traditional customs of the state.
The festivals celebrated in Lagos State are :
i. Efe and Gelede : These are festivals celebrated in Lagos. Efe is usually staged in the middle of the night that preceeding the morning of Gelede. Efe are the recitation of the past historical phenomenon about the family, lineage, or compound in a community. It is used to pass information about moral
ii. Boat Regatta celebration : This is a festival celebrated by the riverine side people of Lagos State, to celebrate sea goddess, Olókùn who is believed to have contributed to the prosperity of fishing.
The festival is celebrated annually in areas that are riverine. It involves the rowing and sailing of canoes. The festival was first staged in Lagos by Chief Ashogbon with Geefe people in 1853. After which the boat regatta was celebrated by the people of Epe, Ketu, Amuwo-odofin, Badagry, Ikorodu, Iredo, Ejinrin, Agbowa, of Lagos State.
The ceremony is made colorful with decorations on the boat to make it beautiful. It is followed with dancing, singing and sacrifice in honor of Olókùn.
iii. Igunnuko Mascurade festivals :
Igunnuko culture is from Nupe people imported from pategi in Niger State, northern Nigeria. Yorùbá people refers to Nupe people as Tapa. Igunnuko festival was brought to Lagos by Ayani the great grandfather of Aleje in 1805.
The Igunnuko festival was adapted from Ndako Gboya cultural festival by the Tapa people as it’s Yoruba form. When Yaisa Ayani realised the original Ojy Ote the place could no longer contain them, he went to Chief Oshodi Tapa, an important Nupe war Chief to Ọba Kosoko ín Lagos who created a place known as Ibashosi ( Igbo Igunnu) in Epetedo community to carry out his festival till today. It is from there that Igunnuko spread out to other part of Lagos.
The Igunnuko masqurade is dressed in robes, stilts, very tall figure and as a secret cult used to hunt witches.
