Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to:
i. Identify the food groups and state their functions
ii. Mention the nutrients derived from each food groups.
Content :
Food contains different kinds of nutrients which perform different functions in the body.
Food can be grouped according to their nutrients and the function they perform in the body.
Food can be classified into three major groups. They are :
1. Body building foods : These are group of foods that builds the body. They help to repair and replace worn-out tissues. They contain nutrients called proteins. Examples of body building foods are beans, eggs, meat, fish, soyabean, milk, yogurt, chicken, turkey, etc.
2. Energy giving foods : These are food that contain nutrient called carbohydrates and fats. They give energy to the body. Examples of this group of foods are rice, wheat, millet, maize, yam, cocoyam, cassava, etc.
3. Body protecting foods : These are foods that give nutrients which protects the body from germs and diseases. The nutrients are vitamins and minerals. Food in this group are made up of fruits and vegetables. Examples of vegetables are carrots, onion, tomato, cabbage and other green vegetables such as bitter leaf, water leaf, amaranthus, Ugwu, Ewedu, etc.
Examples of fruits are lime, lemon, grape, pear, avocado, cherry, orange, banana, pawpaw, watermelon, apple, etc.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking questions orally.
Step 2 : Identify the major food groups and state their functions.
Step 3 : Mentions the nutrients derived from the different food groups.
