Third Term Lesson Note for Week Two
Class: Basic 2 / primary 2/ Grade 2
Subject : Basic Science and Technology
Topic : Forms of Energy
Duration: 40 minutes
Period : Single Period
Reference Materials :
- Stan Basic Science and Technology for Primary 2
- Lagos State Unified Schemes of Work for Primary Schools (Primary 1 – 3)
- Online Resources
Instructional Materials : Charts showing different forms of energy
Behavioural Objectives : By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to :
i. Define energy;
ii. Mention types of energy;
iii. identify and lists the forms of energy.
Content :
Energy is the ability to do work.
Energy exists in many different forms, which are:-
i. Light energy : This is the form energy obtained from other sources of energy. It give illumination, that is brightness through electrical bulb, candle, fire wood, lantern, etc.
ii. Sound energy : This is the energy formed by striking two metal objects or things together. Examples are guitar, drum, gong, etc.
iii. Heat Energy : This is a form of energy obtained from either solar, light or electrical energy. Example is pressing iron, hotplates, gas cooker,
iv. Wind energy : Energy obtained from the wind mill. It is used for grinding and to sail boat.
v. Chemical energy : This is the energy gotten from chemical reactions. For examples, battery, kerosene, diesel, gas, etc.
vi. Solar energy : This is the energy obtained from the sun. It produces heat and light.
vii. Electrical energy : Electrical energy is derived from flowing of current through a cable or wire in a circuit.
We need energy in our daily lives to do so many activities. These includes:
1. Washing of our clothes
i2. Ironing of our clothes
3. Cooking of the food we eat.
4. Energy is needed to do work on the farm
5. It is needed to carry load.
Presentation Steps:
Step I: The teacher revises the previous term’s work with the learners to gain their attention by asking questions
Step II: He or She introduces the new lesson by asking the learners one after the other, ‘what is energy?’
Step III: He or she asks learners to identify and lists of forms of energy and give examples
Step IV: The teacher then defines energy and list examples on the white board as mentioned by the learners.
Step V: He or she then ask the learners to classify the forms of energy into two groups as
(a) natural source of energy
(b) artificial source of energy
Evaluation: The teacher reviews the lesson by asking the learners the following questions as stated below:
1. A _________________ is the to do work.
2. Mention six forms of energy
______________________, _____________________, _____________________, ____________________, _____________________, ____________________,
3. The sun is the primary source of energy. (True, False)
4. List four forms of energy and give one examples of each.
1. ____________________ ___________________
2. ___________________ ____________________
3. ___________________ ____________________
4. ___________________ ___________________
Conclusion: At the end of the lesson, learners were able to answer the questions while the teacher makes some necessary corrections.
Assignment:
1. What is Sound energy
2. Gong, guitar and trumpet are examples of ______________ energy.
3. An example of light energy is _______________.
