Class: Primary 3
Subject: Basic Science
Topic: Forms of Energy (Light energy)
Period: Single Period
Duration: 40 minutes
Reference Book :
- Stan Basic Science and Technology for Primary Schools, Book 3.
- Lagos State Unified Schemes of Work for Primary Schools (Primary 1 – 3)
- Online Resources
Instructional Material : Chart showing sources of light energy
Behavioural Objectives : By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to :
i. Define energy and list the forms of energy
ii. Describe light energy and identify its sources
iii. Mention the uses of light energy
Previous Knowledge: Learners are familiar with energy and some forms of energy.
Content:
Energy is the ability to do work. We make use of different forms of energy in our daily activities These are:
i. Kinetic energy
ii. Potential energy
iii. Solar energy
iv. Chemical energy
v. Thermal (Heat) energy
vi. Electrical energy
vii. Sound energy
viii. Light energy
Light energy: This is the energy possessed by a source of light. It is a form of energy that illuminates places. Light travels in a straight line. Green plants uses light to make their food.
Sources of Light
There are so many sources of light which includes:
i. Burning wick of a candle
ii. Burning flame of a lamp
iii. Sun
iv. Stars
v. Electric bulb
vi. Torch light
vii. Lantern
Uses of Light Energy
1. It is used by plants to make their food through photosynthesis.
2. It is used to see objects clearly
3. To form image (reflection)
4. It is used in the generation of heat.
Presentation Step:
Step 1: The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking questions.
Step 2: He / she introduces the new topic by asking, ” what is energy?”, ” what are the forms of Energy?”
Step 3: The teacher then explains Light energy to the learners with a lot of illustrations.
Step 4: He/she identifies the sources of light energy and states the used.
Evaluation:
1. ____________ is the ability to do work.
2. List five forms of energy: ____________, ______________, _______________, ______________, and _________________.
3. Define Light energy
____________________________________________________________________________________________
4. Mention three sources of light energy
Conclusion: At the end of the lesson, learners were able to answer the questions correctly.
Assignment:
1. Light travels on a _________________________. (a) curve line (b) straight line (c) Zig zag line
2. ______________ is a form of energy that illuminates a place. (a) Sound energy (b) Light energy (c) Chemical energy
3. State two (2) uses of light energy
