Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Define Fraction and give examples
ii. Identify numerator and denominator of any given fractions.
iii. Describe like and unlike fractions with examples.
Previous Knowledge :
Learners have been taught shaded fractions and fraction as part of whole numbers
Content :
Meaning of Fraction
A fraction is one part or more parts of a whole number. It consist of two numbers known as numerator and denominator.
For example : 1/2, 1/4, 3/4, 2/5, 3/7, 4/9, etc.
A numerator is the number found at the top of a fraction. E.g.
i. In 1/ 2, the numerator is 1.
ii. In 3/4, the numerator is 3.
iii. In 2/5, the numerator is 2.
iv. In 4/9, the numerator is 4.
A denominator is the number found at the bottom of a fraction. E.g.
i. In 3/4, the denominator is 4.
ii. In 3/7, the denominator is 7.
iii. In 2/5, the denominator is 5.
iv. In 3/10, the denominator is 10.
Fractions of Whole number
Fractions as part of whole number.
i. 1/2 of 6 = 3.
ii. 1/4 of 20 = 5
iii. 3/4 of 16 = 12 ✏️✏️✏️✏️ ✏️✏️✏️✏️

Types of Fraction.
Fractions can be grouped into two:
1. Like fractions : These are fractions with the same denominator. For example,
i. 2/5 and 1/5 (denominators are 5)
ii. 3/9 and 5/9 (denominators are 9)
iii. 4/7 and 2/7 (denominators are 7)
2. Unlike fractions : These are fractions with different denominator. E.g.
i. 2/5 and 1/4 ( denominators are 5 and 4)
ii. 5/9 and 4/7 ( denominator are 9 and 7)
iii. 3/10 and 1/8 (denominator are 10 and 8)
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking them questions
Step 2 : He/ she introduces the new lesson by asking the learners, ‘what is a fraction?’
Step 3 : The teacher asks the learners to identify the numerator and denominator of fractions
Step 4 : He/ she describe like and unlike fractions with several examples.
Evaluation :
1. Write the denominator of each fraction.
i. 3/8 =
ii. 5/12 =
iii. 2/5 =
iv. 1/4 =
v. 2/3 =
2. Write the numerator of each fraction.
i. 3/4 =
ii. 5/8 =
iii. 11/ 16 =
iv. 7/12 =
v. 2/3 =
3. Write ‘like fraction‘ or ‘unlike fraction‘ in the given pair of Fractions.
i. 1/3 and 2/3 are ________________________
ii. 3/4 and 2/5 are ________________________
iii. 5/8 and 7/8 are _______________________
iv. 4/7 and 1/2 are _______________________
Conclusion : The teacher summarizes the lesson to the learners for a better understanding.
