Behavioural Objectives : By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to :
i. define livestock and give examples
ii. identify and list requirement for livestock Production
Content:
Livestock can define as the animals that are raised on the farmland. Some livestock are raised to produce meat, some milk, egg producers, work animals and guard animals.
Examples are beef cattle, dairy cattle, layers (egg producers), boilers, donkey, ox, horse, camel, dog, etc.
Farm animals are the animals reared and kept on the farm. Farm animals are very useful to farmers both in terms of their uses and the functions they perform on the farm.
Care should be given to these animals in order to make them healthy and productive. The taking care of the animals must come from the aspect of housing, feeding and hygiene. They have to be taken care of by giving them the following requirements:
i. Balanced / adequate food:
ii. Clean water
iii. Medical care
iv. Clean surrounding.
v. Good housing with enough ventilation.
A good balanced diet should be given to farm animals for good healthy growth. A good balanced diet is that diet that contains all the classes of food in the right proportion. The farm animals need them to grow well.
A good and clean water must be given to farm animals. This clean water helps farm animals to digest their food very well.
Good medical care should also be given to farm animals to increase their life span. Regular medical care also keep farm animals away from contagious diseases. The person who looks after the health of animals and treats them medically is known as a Veterinarian or a Veterinary Doctor.
A good and clean surrounding should be provided for farm animals.
A good housing with enough ventilation is needed by the farm animals. Overcrowding of the animals in the house should be avoided. Having too many animals in the house can cause congestion and possibly disease infection.
