Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Define Habitat
ii. Identify and list the types of habitats
iii. Give examples of Habitats of different organisms.
Previous Knowledge : Learners are familiar with the previous lesson on fertilizer.
Content :
A habitat is the home of living organism. Habitat is a place where plants and animals are found or live.
Examples of Habitats are : ponds, bedgrows, woodland, forest, sea shores, etc. The living organism found in these area or places are suited for a particular habitat. This is known as adaptation.
Types of Habitats.
There are basically three types of habitat.
Terrestrial habitat : This is the home of animals that live on land, forest and desert. Examples of animals found in this regions are : goat, chicken,
Aquatic habitat : This is water living environment, such as pond, ocean, river, lakes. Examples of living organism found in this region are fish, crab, oysters, prawn, shark, snake, etc.
Arboreal habitat : This is the home of living organism the live on trees or above the ground. Examples are bird, monkeys,
A pond contains living organisms such as fish, water Lilly, slug, frog and so on. It is a water living environment.
i. A fish has streamlined body, fins and tail which enables it to swim. It has gills which helps to take oxygen from water. It has scales which protect it from injury.
ii. A frog has webbed feet for swimming. It has nostrils for breathing on land and moist skin.
iii. Water Lilly : It has leaves which float on the surface of the pond so that it can get light which is needed for photosynthesis. It root grows in mud to hold it in firmly.
A woodland is another habitat where living organisms like squirrel, earthworms, toadstool, rabbit and snails are found. They exhibit the following adaptation features :
i. Squirrel are agile mammals able to climb and leap on trees. They have strong teeth for cracking nuts as food.
ii. Earthworms : They live in burrow in the soil and feed on dead leaves. They stay in damp soil so that they can take in oxygen through their body surface
iii. Toadstool lives on dead wood and leaves. They have long tiny thread which break down dead matter and absorb nutrients.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : Revision of the previous lesson with the learners by asking questions orally.
Step 2 : Introduces the new lesson by defining habitats
Step 3 : Identify the types of habitats and give examples
Step 4 : Mentions examples of organisms found in the different habitats.
Evaluation :
1. What is Habitat?
2. List the types of habitats.
3. Mention two examples of organism found in the following habitats.
i.
