Historical Development of Computer
The early mechanical counting devices are :
- Abacus
- Napier bones,
- Slide rules,
- Pascal wheel
- Analytical and Difference engine
Pascal’s Wheel (1642)
A French Mathematician and Physicist known as Blaise Pascal built the Pascal’s Wheel, which was capable of adding and subtracting numbers. He invented this machine when he was 19 years old, in the year 1642. The Odometer in cars used Pascal’s wheel principle to keep track of the number of kilometers traveled. Pascaline as it is called was invented to assist Blaise Pascal’s dad who worked as an auditor.
Analytical and Difference Engine (1833).
A scientist from England in 1833, known as Charles Babbage invented Analytical and difference engine which could keep our data safely. They had most of the features of a modern day computer such as input, process, output and storage device. It was based on these contributions that Charles Babbage was referred to as the Father of computer.
He worked with a woman called Ada Augusta Bryon, who is a programmer that explains how the machine works.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : Revision of the previous lesson with the learners by asking questions orally.
Step 2 : He introduces the mechanical counting devices and their inventors.
Step 3 : Describe the Pascal’s wheel feature and uses
Step 4 : Explain the analytic and difference machine. State its features.
