Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :

i. Identify the common medicine or drugs

ii. Identify the local herbs and drugs

Content :

Drugs comes from two major sources, which are :

Synthetic drugs sources (Chemical processes)

Natural sources of drugs (Herbs)

Drugs from chemical processes can come inform of tablets, syrups, capsules, injections, etc. Example of these drugs are paracetamol, vitamin c, cough syrup, amoxil, amartem, leonart, ciprofloxacin, flagyl, ointment, rubb, balm, embrocation, antacid, etc.

Some drugs can be used by swallowing through the mouth, some gets into the body through injection, using needle and syringe, some drugs are applied directly to the skin by rubbing them. Some drugs are used as pain relieve, (paracetamol, panadol, phensic, ibuprofen, felvin, etc.) while some are to cure sicknesses or infections in the body caused by bacteria, viruses, and fungi. They are called antibiotics. For example, amoxil, ciprofloxacin, flagyl, ampiclox, etc.

Drugs from plant parts such as roots, leaves, bark of plant, seeds and stems are called herbs. Example are lemon grass, bitter leaf, lime, lemon, ginger, garlic, turmeric, etc.

Presentation Steps:

Step 1: The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking them questions orally.

Step 2: He /she introduces the new lesson to the learners by explaining and identifying the modern common medicine or drugs.

Step 3: He/she also identify the local herbs and drugs.

Step 4: The teacher gives examples of drugs from local herbs.
