Lagos State Unified Schemes of Work for Primary Schools (Primary 1 – 3)
Online Resources
Instructional Material : Chart showing the formation of an image on a mirror.
Behavioural Objectives : By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to :
i. Define Reflection of light
ii. Mention the properties of a Mirror and explain how image is formed
iii. State the uses of a mirror
Content:
Reflection is the throwing back or throwing off of light falling on a smooth hard surface, such as a mirror.
A mirror has a very smooth shiny surface. It is a piece of glass or any other shiny or polished surface, that throws back images that falls on it.
A mirror is a piece of glass which reflects light and produces the image of any object in front of it.
Light travels on a straight line, but it rays can be diverted with the help of a mirror.
Reflection of light causes images to be formed.
Types of mirror
There are two types of mirror. These are :
i. Plane mirror: This is the looking mirror known as glass.
ii. Curved mirrors: These are concave mirror and convex mirror
Uses of a Mirror
1. We use mirror to look at ourselves.
2. Car mirrors help the driver to see or look at objects behind him and around the corner.
3. Mirrors are used in scientific instruments like telescope, periscope, etc.
Presentation Steps:
Step 1: The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking questions
Step 2: He/ she introduces the new topic by defining reflection of light and a mirror.
Step 3: He/ she then explains formation of image using mirrors
Step 4: The teacher asks the learners to state the uses of mirror.
Evaluation : The teacher asks the following questions:
1. _____________ is the throwing back of light falling on a smooth hard surface of a mirror.
2. Light travels on a __________ line.
3. The condition for image Formation is ________________.
4. A piece of glass which reflects light and produces the image of object in front of it is called a ________________.
5. The direction of light rays can be diverted with the help of a _______________.
Conclusion: At the end of the lesson, learners were able to answer the questions correctly.
Assignment:
1. State two uses of a Mirror.
2. The two types of curved mirrors are ___________________ and _____________________.
3. To form an image, list three things needed.
