Reasons for studying Civic Education
Civic Education is one of the core subjects studied in Nigerian schools at the primary and junior secondary school levels of our educational system. There are always benefits derived from studying a subject both by the learners and their society.
The following are some of the reasons why we study Civic Education :
i.) Public education and awareness: We need to be sufficiently informed about the society we live in. We need to understand the government, their programmes and policies, why we should pay taxes.
ii) The roles of government: The government has many roles to play towards the security and welfare of the citizenry. These roles include provision of
a. security for life and property
b. roads, electricity, water and other amenities
c. healthcare facilities
d. education
e. justice, etc.
If all these are put in place, citizens will be able to contribute meaningfully towards the creation of a better society.
iii) Value of loyalty and patriotism: Through Civic Education, we understand the importance of of loyalty and patriotism. Loyalty is the greatest responsibility we owe to the government and society. Being loyal means we must be law abiding citizens.
By patriotism, we mean love for our society and the readiness to defend it when there is crisis. Patriotism and loyalty always go together. They are important values we must have for our society to develop.
iv) Respect and obedience to rulers and rules and regulations: Civic Education teaches us to respect and obey our rulers, both political and traditional. It also teaches us to respect and obey public rules and regulations.
v) Rights and duties of citizens : Civic Education equips us with our rights and duties as citizens of our society. We need to understand and enjoy our rights and enable others to enjoy theirs. We also need to understand and perform our duties as citizens so that the government can serve us well.
Importance of Civic Education
Every school subject is important in its own way, because if the special contributions it makes to knowledge. The importance of Civic Education include:
1) Developing good citizens: It is through the contributions if good citizens that a society develops. Civic Education contributes a lot to the process of making citizens change to become good and better people.
2) Awareness of our rights: The learning of Civic Education makes us to become aware of our rights as citizens.
3) Awareness of our responsibilities: Civic Education helps us to know our responsibilities, that is those things we must do to assist the government and the society.
4) Creating a better society: Civic Education helps to create a better society in the sense that it teaches us to behave well in society, which makes it peaceful, orderly and stable.
5) Makes government easy: Civic Education makes government easy because, both the government and the governed understand government programmes and policies and the roles they are expected to play.
Presentation Steps:
Step I: The teacher revises the previous topic with the learners.
