Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Define Marriage
ii. List the types of marriages and explain
iii. Differentiate between intra- ethnic marriage and inter – ethnic marriage.
Content :
For the human race to continue, there is need for children to be born to take over for their parent when they are old or die. Child birth therefore can only be possible through the coming together or the union of a man and woman which is called marriage.
What is Marriage?
Marriage is a legal union between a man and a woman with or without their parent consent to become husband and wife.
Reasons why People go into Marriage.
Some people marry for several reasons. Some of these reasons are :
1. Procreation : People marry mainly to have children that will take care of them in their old age and also continue their lineage when they are gone (die).
2. Companionship : people marry mostly for the love, care of their
3. Respect : The society has due respect for married people. It is believed that married people are responsible people.

Types of Marriage
There are basically two types of marriage. These are :
1. Intra-Ethnic Marriage : This is a type of marriage whereby the husband are wife are from the same tribe. For example, a Yoruba man marries a Yoruba woman, an Igbo person got married to an Igbo.
2. Inter-Ethnic Marriage : This is a type of marriage whereby a man marries a woman from another tribe. For example, a Yoruba man marrying an Igbo woman, an Igbo man marries a Hausa woman.
Marrying from another ethnic tribe different from yours can be likened to a coin with two sides.
The advantages of inter ethnic marriage include :
- cultural tolerance
- fostering of unity,
- peaceful coexistence
Disadvantage of Inter-Ethnic Marriage includes :
- conflicting traditions
- language barrier
- intolerance
