Class : Primary 3
Subject : Mathematics
Topic : Measurement of Length
Duration : 80 minutes
Period : Double Periods
Reference Book :
- New Method Mathematics for Primary School, Book 3, by Oredugba étal.
- Lagos State Unified Schemes of Work for Primary Schools (Primary 1 – 3)
- Online Resources
Instructional Material : Chart showing metric unit of Length, real object such as ruler, tape rule, etc.
Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Define Length
ii. State the Unit of measuring length
iii. Identify instrument for measuring length.
Previous Knowledge : Learners are familiar with finding the size of an object.
Content :
Length is the measure of how long or short an object is. It is a way knowing the size of an object using some measuring instrument.
The unit of measuring length is metre (m) or centimetre (cm).
The instrument used in determining the length of an object is ruler, metre rule, tape rule, etc. These instruments make our measurement precise and accurate.
To determine the size of an object, we can also use hand span, foot, arm’s length, pace or stride. But they are not accurate.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1: The teacher revises the previous term’s work with the learners
Step 2: He/ she introduces the new topic to the learners by asking ” what is length?”
Step 3: He / she asks them to identify the instrument for measuring length.
Step 4: The teacher then asks the learners to state the unit of Length.
Evaluation:
1. ___________ is how long or short an object is.
2. The unit of measuring length is ____________ or __________________.
3. List three instruments for measuring length.
4. Use a ruler to measure and record the size of your water bottle.
5. Use a ruler and a pencil to measure and draw the following length:
a. 4cm b. 9cm
Conclusion: At the end of the lesson, learners were able to answer the questions correctly.
Assignment:
1. Measure the length of your classroom using the following:
i. Pace = _____________ ii. Foot = __________
2. Use your hand span to measure the length of the following :
i. Mathematics Textbook = ____________
ii. Exercise book : _____________
3. Measure and record the the length and breadth of the white board.
i. Length of the board = ____________
ii. Breadth of the board = ___________
