Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Define length and state the standard unit of Length.
ii. Identify the standard and non-standard measurement of Length.
iii. Compare length of various object using “longer than” or “shorter than”.
Content :
Length is how long an object is.
The standard unit of measure of length is metres (m) or centimetres (cm).
Other units of length are inches, yards, kilometres, miles, etc.
In olden days, length was measured using non-standard method by using :
i. Handspan. ii. Foot
iii. Arm’s length iv. Stride or pace
These methods are not accurate, because the sizes of hands, arms, foot and walking pace are not the same for every humans.
As a result of technology development today, length is measured accurately with instruments such as :
i. Ruler ii. Metre rule and iii. Tape rule
Comparison of length of objects :
When comparing the length two objects are compared,
I. If the long, object comes first we use “longer than” to describe them.
II. If the short object comes first, we use”shorter than” to describe them.
For examples
A ruler is longer than a pen.
A water bottle is longer than a food flask.
Jide is shorter than Mary.
My pencil is shorter than her pencil.
Evaluation :
1. ____________ is how long an object is. (a) Weight (b) Length (c) Capacity
2. The standard unit of measurement of Length is ___________. (a) gram (b) metre (c) litre
3. _________ and __________ can be used to measure length. (a) ruler and tape rule (b) spring balance and bathroom scale (c) beam balance and cylinder
4. The following are examples of non-standard measure of length except _________. (a) foot (b) stride (c) tape rule
Conclusion : At the end of the lesson learners were able to answer the questions correctly.
