Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Describe the Mother board and state its functions
ii. Explains the Central Processing Unit (CPU) and its division.
iii. Identify the memory unit and types of memory.
Content :
The system unit of the computer has internal components which controls the activities of the computer. These are :
- Motherboard
- Central Processing Unit (CPU)
- Memory Unit
Mother board
The motherboard is the main circuit board located inside the system unit. It is the heart of the system unit. Other system elements are connected to the motherboard, and the whole system is managed and controlled by it. Motherboard contains special chips on which some ICs (Integrated Circuits) are fixed.
The Main Function of the Motherboard.
The motherboard acts as the central backbone of a computer on which other parts are installed such as the CPU, Ram and hard disks.
The motherboard serves as a communication hub for all of the components that are attached to it directly or indirectly. It is responsible for managing the transfer of information within the computer system, which it does by means of the motherboard chipset.
The motherboard is also responsible to distribute power to the various components of the computer.
They are also used in the coordination of the various devices in the computer and maintain an interface among them.
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
The central processing unit (CPU) manages most of computer operations. It contains a control unit and arithmetic logic unit. Processors can be either pins or pin-less. The CPU is the brain of the computer. It carries out all the instructions given to the computer by any software through the hardware. We have the Intel or AMD processors.
Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU) : is responsible for arithmetic operations such as (add, subtract, multiply, divide) and the logical (less than, greater than, If functions) operations in the computer.
Control Unit : controls all the activities done on the computer. It helps to organism the instructions in a way that there is no congestion or mix up.
Memory Unit
The internal memory of the computer is known as main memory or primary memory. It stores all data processed by programs or application on the computer.
There are two types of memory. They are :
RAM – Random Access Memory
ROM – Read Only Memory.
RAM is the temporary memory, which holds data for a short time while ROM is a permanent storage which holds data for long time.
Presentation Steps
Step 1 : Revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking questions on the previous lesson taught.
Step 2 : Introduces the new topic by describing the system unit and identifying its internal components
Step 3 : Describes the motherboard and state its functions
Step 4 : Identify parts of the motherboard and describe its components such as CPU, Memory (RAM and ROM)
